What is the real story behind the "First Thanksgiving"? Did it really happen? Yes,
and No! Learn where the Thanksgiving holiday that we celebrate today really came from wih this exciting and educational program.
We will discuss the harvest feast in 1621, when both the Pilgrims and their Native allies sat down and ate together, but that
it was not called Thanksgiving until the 1800s! There was a day of "thanksgiving" in Plymouth Colony in 1622 where there was
no feasting and no Natives. Confusing, yes, boring and inconsequential, No. We at PARP feel that it is important for all people
to know the facts as they are reported in seventeenth century sources and learn how these facts were mixed up over the centuries
to create the holiday we celebrate today.
In this program we explore the two worlds of the Pilgrims and the Natives in the
seventeenth century and learn how each held days of thanksgiving and gave thanks for good harvest and salvation from disasters.
Children will learn what sorts of foods were eaten by both the Native people and their Pilgrim allies during celebrations
and what the menu probably was during the "First Thanksgiving". What, no cranberry sauce? Nope, and we will explain why.
