What do you mean they didn't have buckles on their hats and or a passion for black clothes?!?!
They had buckles on the hats and shoes, they only wore black, they were very short and lived only until 30 or so, they landed on Plymouth Rock, they almost starved the first winter, they had a friendly Native living with them named Squanto, the children only had dirt and twigs to play with-no toys, they had the First Thankgiving with the Natives.  These are only a few of the myths that many people have about the settlers at Plymouth Plantation. The belief that they were so very different from the people of today is what often causes them to be misinterpreted.

Children have the opportunity to discover that although the families who lived almost 400 years ago were in some ways different from their own, they also had many similarities. During this program, we share the lives of Pilgrim boys and girls in New Plymouth with children to help them overcome some of the misconceptions that they may have.

Activities in this program include:

  • coloring a Pilgrim boy or girl
  • learning how to play a number of games that Pilgrim children played (with take home instructions)
  • dressing up like a Pilgrim boy or girl
  • planting an herb garden with the same herbs the Pilgrims used
  • making a sundial similar to ones the Pilgrims had
  • writing with a quill and homemade ink

Participants will receive take home materials that include resources as well as childrens activities for families.
